There are moments in life when we have to choose: Do we step forward, or do we stand back? Are we willing to put ourselves in harm’s way to help someone else?

For Cathy Dowdy, there was never a question. A graduate of Brunswick High School, Cathy went on to earn her master’s degree in Elementary Education from Georgia Southern University. She spent more than 30 years as an elementary school teacher, touching the lives of countless students along the way. Outside the classroom, Cathy cherished time with her grandchildren and was always eager to babysit for family and friends, welcoming every child as though they were her own.

On Sunday, October 13, 2024, Cathy was vacationing in Ponte Vedra Beach with family friends when their 6-year-old son was caught in a rip current and pulled into the crashing waves. Without hesitation, Cathy ran into the water to help. With the assistance of another bystander, the boy was brought safely to shore. Cathy, however, suffered extensive injuries. After months of recovery, Cathy passed peacefully, surrounded by the people she loved. Her legacy continues to inspire all who had the honor of knowing her.

We are honored to recognize Cathy as this year’s Five-Star Hero and to remember the life she dedicated to helping others.
